Alava is made up of 51 Municipalities, the largest of which is Vitoria-Gasteiz with a population of 217,628, followed by Laudio-Llodio with a population of 20,000 and Amurrio with 8,000 inhabitants. A municipality may encompass several town halls, or administrative boards, which are smaller villages or districts with their own characteristics. Currently, there are 330 such administrative boards. This number varies occasionally as villages are annexed or divided.
